Fort Lauderdale, Fla. (March 4, 2006) - The No. 13 ranked Nova Southeastern University baseball team (12-4) split a doubleheader with the Dominican College Chargers (3-1) on Saturday afternoon at the NSU Baseball Complex. The Sharks took the opener 13-2 and were edged 5-4 in 10-innings in the finale, to halt a seven-game winning streak by NSU.
NSU's game one starter Ruddy Garcia (Jr., West Palm Beach, Fla.) improved to 2-0 while striking out eight Chargers and allowing six hits in seven innings of work. Sharks CF Matt Mindick (So., Boynton Beach, Fla.) led a 12-hit NSU attack, while going 2-for-5 with two runs and a grand slam homerun, as NSU pushed eight runs across the plate in the 7th inning. NSU 2B Sean McFadden (Sr., Hollywood, Fla.) and C Jimmy Sposa (So., Coconut Creek, Fla.) also hit home runs to back Garcia in the win.
The Sharks fell in 10-innings, of the scheduled 7-inning second game, as the visiting Chargers plated the game-winner on a wild pitch in the top of the 10th. Dominican had tied the score at 4-4 in their final at bat on an infield groundout by Keith Gebert (Brooklyn, NY), which sent the game to extra innings. Dominican relief pitcher Nick Schrieber (Greencastle, PA) (1-0) picked up the win for the visitors with four innings of shutout relief to earn a split on the afternoon.
Junior Jose Escalera (Bronx, NY) went 2-5 in the second game, while Jose Made (Binghamton, NY) went 2-4 in the win.
NSU LF Steven Emery (Jr., Hollywood, Fla.,) was 1-for-2 and hit his first career homerun in game two. Sharks RF Greg Burrows (Sr., Nassau, Bahamas) was 3-for-5, while 3B Cory Clark (So., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) was 2-for-4 with 1 RBI and SS Shawn Langlois (Jr., Wellington, Fla.,) was 2-for-6 as NSU out-hit Dominican 12-9.
NSU wraps up the three game series with Dominican College at 1:00 PM tomorrow at the NSU Baseball Complex.
