Dominican Baseball Rallies To Defeat St. Thomas Aquinas, 7-6

The
Chargers baseball team won a non-conference game against St. Thomas
Aquinas College, 7-6 this afternoon. With the win, the
Chargers improve to 7-6 overall, while the Spartans fall to
3-12.
The
Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as
Fernando Peralta (Pine Bush, NY) got a one hit
single to left field and later scored on a sacrifice fly to
centerfield by Kevin Conners (West Babylon,
NY).
Dominican
tied the game in the bottom of the second as junior Sean
Brown (Massapequa, NY) doubled down the left field line to
lead off the inning, followed by an RBI single to left by
designated hitter Joseph DiMicelli (Staten Island,
NY). The Chargers then took advantage of two
Spartan errors to gain a 3-1 lead.
DC added a run in the bottom of the third as Jose Escalera
(Bronx, NY) led off the inning with a walk, moved to
second on a single by Brown and went to third on a
sacrifice bunt by DiMicelli. He
came in to score on an RBI ground out to third by catcher
Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) Dominican took a 4-1
advantage.
St. Thomas Aquinas rallied in the top of the fifth with two runs
as Kevin Spense (Port Jefferson Station, NY) led
off the inning with a single to center and went to third on a one
out single by Pat Murray (Demarest, NJ).
Both players came in to score on a two out RBI
single to center by Peralta, cutting the Charger
lead to 4-3.
The Spartans scored three runs in the top of the sixth to take a
6-4 lead as Peralta collected his third hit of the
day, this time a two out double to right field that scored two
runs, giving his team a 6-4 lead.
The
Chargers got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when
Tom Keegan (Dickson City, PA) got a
one out single, stole second and came in to score on an RBI double
to left by Escalera to make the score 6-5.
Dominican rallied in the bottom of the ninth as
Keegan and Escalera got back to
back singles and DiMicelli walked to load the
bases. On a 3-2 count, Gilardo
delievered the game winning line drive single over the head of the
left fielder to lift the Chargers to a 7-6 victory.
Spartan
pitcher Brian Lamar (Flushing, NY) allowed five
runs on eight hits in 8 1/3 innings. John
Muller (Mahopac, NY) suffered the loss.
Charger
starter Joe Kubanik (Stony Point, NY) went five
innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out six
batters. Frank Maynard, Jr (Brooklyn,
NY) got the win, pitching the ninth inning.
The Chargers are back in action tomorrow when they travel to the
University of the Sciences in Philadelphia for a Central Atlantic
Collegiate Conference (CACC) double header, slated to begin at
12pm.
