Chargers Baseball Sweeps Wilmington College Wildcats
Blauvelt, NY (4/14/07) The Dominican College baseball team swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double header against visiting Wilmington College this afternoon. Dominican took the first game, 9-8 and won the night cap 9-5 on a game winning grand slam by Tom Keegan (Dickson City, PA). With the wins, DC improves to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 20-10 overall and 5-4 in the CACC.

Dominican took the first game, 9-8 and won the night cap 9-5 on a game winning grand slam by Tom Keegan (Dickson City, PA). With the wins, DC improves to 11-8 overall and 5-2 in the CACC, while Wilmington falls to 20-10 overall and 5-4 in the CACC.
The Chargers took an early lead in game one on a two run homer by Yordis Veras (East Elmhurst, NY) and an RBI single by Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) for a 3-0 lead after two innings. WC fought back for four runs in the top of the third on a two run blast to right by Andy Chunn (Lewes, DE) and a two run single by Chase Barnes (Baltimore, MD) for a 4-3 lead.
DC regained the lead in the fourth on a two run homer by senior catcher Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) as the Chargers went ahead 6-4. The Wildcats then went ahead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on five consecutive walks allowed by the Charger pitching staff to take a 7-6 lead.
Dominican rallied in the bottom of the sixth, scoring three runs on three hits to take a 9-7 lead. The team then added another run in the eighth to go up 10-7, but WC right fielder Jason Rust (Greenwood, DE) hit a solo shot for the final 9-8 Charger victory.
Reliever, Daniel Bucci (Dobbs Ferry, NY) got the win (2-0), going 3 1/3 innings and allowing one run on three hits and striking out three hitters. Starter Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) went 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs on six hits and six strikeouts.
Wildcat Joe Matterer (Newark, DE) suffered the loss, allowing nine runs on 11 hits.
In game two, Wilmington had a 5-4 lead going into the bottom of the ninth until pinch hitter, Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) reached on an error to lead off the inning, went to second on a sac bunt by Gilardo, third in a pinch hit single by Brian Smith (Stony Point, NY) and scored on a RBI single by Veras to tie the game at 5-5. Joe DiMicelli (Staten Island, NY) got a two out intentional walk to load the bases and Keegan, who came in as a pinch runner in the bottom of the eighth, hit the first pitch over the right field fence for the game winning grand slam, lifting the Chargers to the 9-5 win.
Todd Spindler (Cheseapeake, VA) got the win (1-2), getting the final two outs of the ninth inning, while Wildcat Phil Aviola (Newark, DE) suffered the loss.
