Molloy Nips Dominican in Overtime, 87-77

Blauvelt, NY (12/30/05)The Molloy College Lions netted 16 points in overtime to defeat the Dominican College Chargers, 87-77 this evening at the Hennessy Center.

The Lions were led by junior forward Jesus Zapata (Bronx, NY) with the team's only double-double, netting 18 points and grabbing 18 rebounds. Sophomore Glenn Martin (Brooklyn, NY) netted 17 points, while Todd Hampton (Colts Neck, NJ) contributed 14 points and seven assists. Senior Mike Mooney (Staten Island, NY) had 11 points and Vincent Falzone (Middle Village, NY) grabbed 10 rebounds in the win.

The Chargers were led by senior Tahiem Stewart (Harlem, NY) who netted a season high 30 points and had eight rebounds. Freshman Will Carty (Bronx, NY) was the only other Charger in double figures with 14 points. Zerimar Ramirez (Barrington, RI) scored nine points and had a team leading nine rebounds in the loss.

The first half saw both teams struggle from the floor as Molloy shot 34.3% and Dominican shot 41.4% en route to a 29-29 score. Zapata netted six of his 18 points in the first half, while Stewart scored 10 points for the Chargers.

Both teams shot better in the second half as MC shot 48.3% and DC improved to 57.7%, to make the score 71-71 at the end of regulation.

The Lions became hot in overtime, shooting 4-6 from the floor and 8-10 from the free throw line, amassing 16 points. The Chargers shot just 1-4 from the floor and 3-4 from the line for a total of six points.

Dominican will be back in action as the host the Dominican College New Year's Tournament on January 4th and 5th. DC will take on New York Institute of Technology at 8pm on the 4th at the Hennessy Center.
