New Castle, DE (1/8/08) A three-pointer by junior guard Mike Shipman with 0.2 seconds on the clock, sent the Wildcats of Wilmington University into an overtime session with the visiting Chargers of Dominican College, where they pulled away for a 96-93 victory in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference men’s basketball action on Tuesday evening at the Pratt Center.
Dominican dominated play throughout the first half, and entered the break holding a 42-31 lead. Wilmington turned things around in the second period, slowly cutting down the Charger lead. With just over three minutes remaining, the Wildcats went on a 8-3 run. Up by three, with 18 seconds left, Dominican’s Will Carty (Bronx, NY) hit a three-pointer to give the visitors the advantage (76-73). But, Wilmington answered back on the next possession, as Shipman drained the game-tying three just before the buzzer sounded to send the teams into overtime. The Wildcats led from start to finish in the overtime session, opening with a 7-0 run and never looked back as clutch free throw shooting down the stretch preserved the win
Wilmington was led by junior guard Mike Shipman, who posted a game-high 25 points, six rebounds, and eight assists. Junior forward Antonio Sherrod added 20 points and pulled down nine boards, while senior guard Maurice Furrowh notched 17 points. Sophomore center Allen Hairston added 13 points and seven rebounds, while senior swingman Taurean Temple rounded out the Wildcats in double figures with 11 points.
The Chargers were led by Brandon Brock’s (Newburgh, NY) 21 points. Shelton Gibbs (Jersey City, NJ) added 18 points, six steals, and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, while Tim Matchett (Pitman, NJ) added 15 points and five boards. Kris Knez (Astoria, NY) chipped in with six points and eight rebounds for Dominican.
Wilmington held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding the Chargers by a slim 41-39 margin. The Wildcats shot over 53 percent from the floor, including 7-of-11 from three point range, while Dominican shot almost 47 percent, but were held to just 7-of-91 from behind the arc.
With the win, Wilmington improved to 2-2 in the CACC and 6-7 overall, while Dominican dropped to 1-2 in the conference and 6-7 on the season.
