BRIDGEPORT, QUEENS VICTORIOUS ON DAY ONE OF JIM CLANCY TOURNAMENT
Blauvelt, NY (1/2/08) The University of Bridgeport Purple Knights and the Knights of Queens College were victorious on day one of the 2nd Annual Jim Clancy Tournament held on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. UB defeated the Caldwell College Cougars, 88-74, while QC rallied to defeat host Dominican College, 74-72.
In the first game, the Purple Knights held a commanding 40-25 lead over the Cougars, shooting 16-30 (53.3%) from the floor and finishing the game 31-56 (55.4%).
Cornell Littlejohn (Oakland, CA) and Teairez Stennis (St. Louis, MO) led UB with 24 points each, with Littlejohn adding seven rebounds. Lex James (Brooklyn, NY) and Quentin Martin (White Plains, NY) added 10 points a piece, as Martin had a team leading eight rebounds.
The Cougars were led by junior Manny Perez (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Michael Wise (Whitesboro, NJ) and Sam Cricelli (England) had 11 points each in the loss.
In the second game, QC rallied from a nine point deficit at the half to go up 69-68 with 2:06 remaining on a jump shot by Mike Liander (Elmhurst, NY). DC regained the lead with 1:45 to go on a layup by Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY) but the Knights went on a 5-0 (3-4 from the charity stripe in the final minute) en route to the 74-72 win. QC shot 25-31 from the foul line to Dominican's 6-13.
Khaleef Allicot (Brooklyn, NY) led QC with 22 points and eight rebounds. Gerald Eugene (Wyandanch, NY) netted 17 points and a game leading 12 rebounds, while Maalik Oliver (Roslyn, NY) scored 18 points and Liander finished with 12 points and eight rebounds.
The Chargers were led by Brock with 14 points, six assists and five rebounds. Junior Jonathan Guzman (Rutherford, NJ) scored 11 points, while James Mosser (Stanley, VA) had eight points off the bench.
With the wins, UB and QC improve to 4-5 and 2-8 while CC and DC drop to 2-9 and 5-5 overall.
Tomorrow night Queens will take on Caldwell at 6pm, while
Bridgeport will face Dominican at 8pm on Coach Baxter
Court.
