2008-2009 Dominican College Men's Basketball Preview
Looking to improve on last season's 13-15 overall record and an 8-8 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record, the Chargers return nine players and added four promising new faces to the roster. DC finished the regular season in third place in the CACC North Division and were seeded third in the North Division for the CACC Tournament. They traveled to second seeded, Caldwell College, in the quarter-finals and ended their season with a 65-79 loss to the Cougars. Junior guard, Brandon Brock, led the team with 17 points and five rebounds. This season Joseph Clinton, who enters his 18th year at the helm, and his staff are very excited and optimistic about this year's team.
This season the team will be led by the experienced back senior backcourt of captains Will Carty 10.8 ppg last year), Damien Davis (4.5 ppg, 2.0 apg) and Brandon Brock, who led the team last year with 11.7 ppg. Freshman Wayne Cottle, a 1,000 point scorer out of Montclair High School, is a versatile player who can play either guard position.
The power forward position will be manned by freshman Elliot Watson, a standout player from Peekskill High School. Backing up Watson will be junior college transfer, Zack Huston. Huston is a tough JUCO transfer from Broome Community College, where he averaged 11.2 rpg and made the All-Region #3 Team. Senior Dato Sakvarelidze will also quality minutes as he is a skilled player who runs the floor non-stop and has a very effective outside shot.
Rounding out the forward spot will be junior Brendan McManus who will provide instant offense with his three point shooting capabilities and senior Abdul Sulaiman will add depth to the front court.
There is a battle for the starting center position among returners Kres Knez and Tim Matchett, who both had outstanding freshmen campaigns. Knez is an excellent low post scorer, while Matchett is a skilled rebounder.
The Chargers will open up the 2008-09 at the Adelphi University Tip-Off Classic to be held November 15 and 16. Dominican will take on Concordia College in the season opener and face Adelphi University the next night. DC will also host the 4rd Annual Jim Clancy Tournament in January and the 21st Annual Bobby Mulligan Game on February 7, 2009 against Wilmington University. The Chargers will also travel to Hawaii and square off against # 25 Chaminade University and the University of Hawaii-Hilo on December 15 and 18.
The experience of the back court, along with a very talented group of freshmen make the 08-09 men's basketball team a very powerful offensive club that will push the ball up the floor and be very effective from beyond the three point arc. The coaching staff is excited to see this group take the floor and make a run to the CACC Championship.
