2009-2010 Dominican College Men's Basketball Preview
With the addition of 9 new comers to the roster, along with 4 experienced returning players, the future looks promising for the 2009-10 Dominican college Men's Basketball Team. Head Coach Joseph S. Clinton (20th year) is very excited about this year's Charger s Men's Basketball Team. Practices have been up beat, productive, and very competitive. Coach Clinton feels this year's squad will improve each game and be there at the end of the season battling in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) playoffs.
The center position will be very strong this season for the Chargers with junior transfer Almin Hodzic and freshman Cory Quimby. Hodzic, who will start, averaged 24.7 ppg and 10.9 rpg at the County College of Morris. Hodzic, who is a long and tenacious big man, will be counted on for his scoring and rebounding. Backing up Hodzic will be Quimby, who hails from Minisink Valley High School, where he averaged 26.2 ppg and 16.8 rpg. Quimby is a crafty down low player who can score outside inside or going to the basket.
Competing for the starting power forward position will be a pair of seniors, Marquis Reddick and Zach Huston. Reddick is an athletic slasher, while Huston is an aggressive low post player. Both will be counted on for scoring, rebounding and leadership. They will be backed up by freshman Daniel Woods from Riverside Baptist HS (MD). Woods is a strong low post presence who can score low and rebound on both ends of the floor.
At the small forward position returner Mike Calzonetti will battle freshman Gerald Hill from Mt. St. Joseph HS (MD). Calzonetti is a hard-nosed player who excels on the defensive end of the floor and with his hustle. Hill is an athletic forward who is effective driving to the basket. They will be backed up by freshman Tyler Stradford from Moore Catholic HS. Stradford is an athletic offensive presence and a very effective defensive player on the court.
Senior Brendan McManus returns at the shooting guard position to provide instant offense for the Chargers from behind the three point arc. Backing him up is freshman Preston Smith. A graduate of Holy Spirit High School in New Jersey, Smith has been impressive in pre-season with his excelent all around guard play.
At the point guard spot, the Chargers have two talented players who will compete for the starting position. Junior Jamell Cromartie, a transfer from Monroe College, is an excellent floor general who has the ability to hit the open man anywhere on the court. Cromartie can also knock down his outside shot anywhere. Battling him for the spot is freshman dynamo Leon Porter, who hails from Vincent Pallotti High School in Maryland. Porter is a super fast point guard who is very exciting in the open floor with the ball. Like Cromartie, Porter can stick the outside shot and score on the drive. Backing up both will be junior newcomer Erol Belizaire from St. Joseph Regional High School (NJ). Belizaire is a hard working defensive specialist who will see time at both guard spots.
The Chargers will open the season in Fairbanks, Alaska at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks Invitational being held November 19th-21st. They then will come home to host the Dominican College Tip-Off Tournament December 4th-5th. The Chargers will also compete in the Caldwell College Holiday Tournament December 19th-20th and the Pace University Holiday Classic December 28th-29th.
On January 2nd- 3rd, 2010 the Chargers will host the 4th Annual James Clancy Tournament and the 23rd Annual Bobby Mulligan Memorial Game will be on February 6th versus Wilmington University.
With all the new additions the 2009-10 season and future look bright for the Dominican College Men's Basketball Team.
