Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/18/18) The Dominican College men's basketball team was edged by the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College on Sunday by a score of 63-61. The game was the final contest of the 7th Annual Dan Sullivan Memorial Tournament.
The Spartans had a strong first half by scoring 35 points and holding the Chargers to 24 points. The Spartans shot 45.5% from three-point range and 85.7% from the free throw line. Zachary Rzewnicki led the team with 9 points in the first half. Demetre Roberts added 8 points in the first half. The Spartans outrebounded DC 22-15.
Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) led the Chargers I the first half with 8 points while Sayon Charles (Staten Island, N.Y.) added 6 points. The Chargers shot 85.7% from the free throw line and 34.6% from the field in the first half.
The Spartans led the Chargers by as many as 15 points in the second half. The Chargers came storming back to tie the game at 61-61 with 45 seconds remaining in the game. The Spartans took a 63-61 lead with 24 seconds to go. STAC held onto the lead to secure their fifth win of the season to improve to 5-0 overall.
Jason Copman (Cumberland, Md.) led the Chargers in their second half come back with 12 points and 8 rebounds. Copman finished the game with 14 points and 12 rebounds for a double-double. Rodwell led the Chargers with 15 points in the loss while Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) added 11 points and 4 rebounds. Daniel Grant (Middletown, N.Y.) finished with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists for the Chargers.
Roberts led the Spartans with 16 points in the win and Sekou Cisse added 12 points in the win. Kevin Lynch and Zachary Rzewnicki each finished the game with 9 points while Louis Griffith and Osbell Caraballo scored 8 points.
The Chargers will be back in action on Sunday, November 25th when they host the University of Bridgeport at 2:00 PM.
