Orangeburg, N.Y. (11/25/18) The Dominican College men's basketball team used an 11-6 run in overtime to lift them to a 90-85 victory over the visiting Purple Knights from the University of Bridgeport in a non-conference game played this afternoon on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center.
The win propels the Chargers to a 3-2 record on the season, while Bridgeport drops to 3-2 overall.
Dominican quickly jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first five minutes of the contest behind 10 points from junior guard Tavon Ginyard (Brentwood, N.Y.). DC would extend their lead to 31-17 with 6:02 left in the half, but a 21-6 run by the Purple Knights would give them the 38-37 edge at the intermission.
An Ian Gardener (Norwalk, Conn.) dunk with 11:18 left in the second half would rebuild a 10 point advantage (65-55) for the Chargers, but Bridgeport would rally and tie the game, 77-77 with two and a half minutes left in regulation. Junior Jason Copman (Cumberland, Md.) gave DC a two-point (79-77) lead with a layup, but two Purple Knight free throws with 1:55 to go would knot the score at 79-all and force the overtime.
DC opened the overtime period with a 4-1 run and went on to the 90-85 win.
Junior Daraja Rodwell (Baldwin, N.Y.) led all scorers on the afternoon with 21 points and eight rebounds.
Ginyard finished with 20 points (7-7 from the free throw line) and three steals, while Copman recorded 11 points and eight caroms.
The Chargers return to action on December 4th when they host Post University in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) opening game on Coach Baxter Court in the Hennessy Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 pm in the third annual Mike Coffey Game.
