MANCHESTER, N.H. The Southern New Hampshire University men's soccer team capped off a solid opening weekend with a 1-0 victory over Dominican College here today at Melucci Field on the Saint Anselm College campus. SNHU, which recorded its second-straight shutout, improved to 2-0-0, while Dominican fell to 1-1-0.
The first half featured limited scoring chances and the game remained scoreless until the 39th minute when junior David McGuire (Glasgow, Scotland) sent a direct kick over a wall of defenders and into the upper left corner of the Dominican net from 22 yards out. It marked the third goal of the year for McGuire, who has accounted for all of SNHU's goals thus far.
Dominican nearly tied the game just a minute before halftime, but senior Kyle Clancy (Walden, NY) sent a shot over the SNHU net after getting behind the Penmen backline and breaking in alone on the SNHU net.
Dominican pressured the SNHU goal late in the game and came up with two solid scoring chances in the final two minutes. The first came when Clancy sent a hard shot through a screen of players that SNHU netminder Dan Pelc (Hamilton, Ontario) deflected out of play at the last second. Sophomore Ryan Clancy (Walden, NY) had a solid chance a minute later, but his shot from 20 yards out was smothered by Pelc.
Pelc finished with four saves enroute to his second shutout of the season and fifth career shutout. Sophomore Rob Kelly (Kearny, NJ) finished with two saves for Dominican.
