2009 Dominican College Men's Soccer Season Summary
The Dominican College men's soccer team finished with an overall record of 13-4-2 and a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) record of 8-2-1, while making their third appearance in program history in the NCAA East Regional Tournament. The Chargers finished second in the CACC behind Wilmington University and earned the second seed in the CACC Tournament.
Dominican squared off against seventh-seeded Nyack College in the quarter-finals of the CACC Tournament and suffered a 1-0 loss to the eventual CACC Champions.
DC earned the fourth seed in the NCAA East Regional Tournament hosted by the top-seeded Dolphins of Le Moyne College. The Chargers faced the fifth seeded and 25th ranked Ravens of Franklin Pierce University in first round action and lost a close game 2-1 to end their season.
Senior forward Joe Wright led the team and ranked second in the CACC with 16 goals on the year. He also leads the team and ranks second in the conference in points (38), third in the CACC points per game (2.00) and goals per game (0.84). He led the team with 67 shots this season and ranked fourth in the CACC, while being ranked second in the conference with five game-winning goals. He was named to the All-CACC First Team for the third straight year, made his third appearance on the Daktronics East Region Second Team, named to the NCAA East Regional All-Tournament Team and earned his first Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division II First Team All-Star honor and NCAA Division II All-East Region First Team honors.
Junior defender Clifton Huxtable was a crucial part of a Charger defense that has allowed just 16 goals all season and has helped the team record six shutouts this year. He earned All-CACC First Team honors, Daktronics East Region Second Team honors, was an ECAC Second Team All-Star selection and received NCAA Division II All-East Region Third Team accolades.
Sophomore keeper Brandon Heembrock started all 19 games in the net for the Chargers this season. He led the conference in save percentage (.869) and shutouts (6) and finished second in goals against average (0.82). He ranked third in saves (106) and fourth in saves per game (5.58). He was named to the All-CACC First Team this season, named to the CACC All-Tournament team, was named to the Daktronics East Region Second Team and was an ECAC First Team All-Star selection.
Senior James Hamilton earned his second appearance on the All-CACC Second Team, while rookie Pedro Franklin De Araujo earned All-CACC Honorable mention honors and was named to the NCAA East Regional All-Tournament Team.
The 2009 men's soccer team will graduate four players. Coach Campbell is confident with a strong recruiting class, the 2010 Chargers will once again return to the CACC Tournament Championship Game and to the NCAA Tournament.
