FAZIO,
DURANDO HIT MARKS AS SETTERS WIN IN KICK-OFF
CLASSIC
BRIARCLIFF, NY –At
the 2006 Pace University Kick-Off Classic, both Northeast-10
Conference institutions, Bryant University and host Pace
University, won their opening day games. Bryant
defeated Caldwell College, 4-0, before Pace downed Dominican
College, 5-0. Both Pace and Bryant open the year
at 1-0 while Caldwell and Dominican start the year at 0-1.
In the first game of the
Classic, which started an hour and a half late due to inclement
weather and poor field conditions, Bryant jumped on the board first
when Caldwell goalkeeper Richelle Morse (Mt. Holly, NJ) allowed a
goal that was deflected by her own teammate. Bryant
would score their second goal when Tricia Spada (Dedham, MA) found
Kellie Barker (Westfield, MA) on a corner kick to give the Bulldogs
a 2-0 lead. Casey Grange (Methuen, MA) would
then score twice within thirty seconds on assists from Brianne
Lustenring (Massapequa, MA) and Stephanie Zalewski (Parsippany,
NJ).
Bryant dominated play,
outshooting Caldwell, 33-2, while also holding the advantage in
corner kicks, 8-1. In net, Bryant’s Jessica
Neales (Swansea, MA) had two saves in 90 minutes for her first
shutout of the season while her counterpart, Caldwell’s
Morse, had 11 saves while allowing four goals.
In the nightcap, senior captains Kelly Fazio (Ann Arbor,
MI/Saline) and Jocelyne Durando (Monroe,
NY/Monroe-Woodbury) had record setting days for the
Setters. Fazio kicked off Pace’s scoring
with her 1st goal of the season and 20th of
her career on an assist from sophomore Victoria Rodriguez
(Whitestone, NY/St. Francis Prep). The
goal ties Fazio for the most goals in a career, set last season by
Amanda Thorman (2001-05). Fazio also had three
assists in the game, giving her 48 career points and moving her
into 2nd place all-time. She trails
Marta Anderson-Winchell’s (2002-05) 56 career points.
Durando made three saves
in 90 minutes in net for her 13th career save, breaking
the previous mark set by Ria Carroll (2002-03) of 12.
Fazio hooked up with
senior Allison Levine (Ellicott City, MD/Wikk
Lake) twice in the game and returned the favor to
Rodriguez, hooking the sophomore up with her first career goal just
before the end of the first half. Freshman
Dania D’Alessandro (Victor, NY/Victor) got
in on the action as well, netting her first career goal just under
two minutes into the 2nd half.
Pace dominated the
matchup, outshooting Dominican,19-5, while also holding the edge in
corner kicks, 6-1.
The 2006 Pace University Kick-Off Classic concludes tomorrow when the Setters take on Caldwell at 11:00 a.m., followed by Bryant and Dominican squaring off at 1:30 p.m. Both games will be played on Pace Field on the Briarcliff campus of Pace University.
