North Andover, MA - Freshman Jackie Vickers (Norwell, MA) scored her fifth goal of the season and all three Merrimack goalkeepers combined to post its fourth shutout of the season as the Warriors defeated Dominican College 3-0 in non-conference women's soccer action Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field.
The win lifts the Warriors to 8-1 on the season heading into Tuesday night's showdown at Franklin Pierce. The Ravens knocked off Merrimack three times last season, including a 4-1 win at Sodexho Field in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Vickers opened the scoring at 14:01 when she banged home a cross pass from classmate Kellie Connolly (Nahant, MA). Junior Heather Macedo (New Bedford, MA) started the play with a breakout pass to Connolly from her own end.
Freshman Alyssa Wollman (Northford, CT) pushed the lead to 2-0 with her second goal of the year at 35:42. Sophomore Jen Conway (Douglas, MA) lofted a corner kick into the box, where Wollman knocked the ball past Chargers netminder Valentina Sturchio.
Sophomore Nikki Abruzzese (Morris Plains, NJ) capped the scoring with her third goal of the year at 42:32, heading the ball into the back of the net off a corner kick from junior Kristin Anderson (Lynnfield, MA).
Senior Caitlin Stephan (Northboro, MA) started in net for the Warriors and did not record a save en route to earning her eighth win of the season. Senior Nicole Snizek (Springfield, MA) relieved Stephan late in the first half before junior Shannon Rowan (Fair Haven, NJ) made her first appearance of the season in the second half for Merrimack. Rowan played just over 10 minutes before leaving due to injury, which brought Snizek back into the game. She finished the afternoon with the only save for the Warriors. Sturchio, meanwhile, made 16 saves for Dominican (2-6-1), who was outshot 25-2
