Orangeburg, NY (4/24/08) The Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College defeated the visiting Dominican College Chargers, 7-5 this afternoon in a non-conference game at Veteran's Memorial Field.
The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the first on a RBI single, but the Chargers came back to tie the game in the second on a sacrifice fly by Drew Dombkowski (Southampton, MA) to score Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) who had reached base on a one out double.
STAC came back with a two run bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead, but DC came back with a run in the fourth to cut the deficit to 3-2 as Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) has an RBI single to once again score Lopez who had reached base on a Spartan fielding error.
The Spartans added a run in the fifth and three in the sixth to give them a 7-2 lead going into the top of the ninth where the Chargers struck for three runs. An RBI ground out by Dan Robinson (Massapeqa, NY) brought in Mortellaro, followed by an RBI single by Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) to plate Dombkowski. With two on and two out sophomore Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) got the fifth hit of the inning for the Chargers to score Ryan and cut the lead to 7-5. A infield ground out would end the game for DC and give STAC the 7-5 victory.
Charger starter Corey Murphy (Melville, NY) took the loss allowing seven runs (four earned) on seven hits and nine strikeouts.
With the loss the Chargers fall to 21-20 overall.
