Boca Raton, FL (3/19/08) The Dominican College baseball squad defeated Dowling College, 9-7 this afternoon in a non-conference game held at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fl.
The Chargers struck early with two runs in the top of the first as senior Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) hit a one out double. Outfielder Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) followed with a walk and both advanced a base with stolen bases. Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) received the second straight free base by Dowling pitching to load the bases and first basemen Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) walked in a run on the third straight walk. Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) reached on a fielder's choice that scored a run and gave Dominican a 2-0 lead.
Dominican was on the attack again in the top of the fourth scoring three more runs with two outs for a 5-0 lead. Second base men Jonathan Ryan (Troy, NY) was hit to get a pass to first, stole second and game into score on a double by Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY). Brown was hit to put two runners on and Robinson came into score on the RBI single by Maloney. Brown later scored on a wild pitch.
Dowling got a run back in the bottom stanza as Brian Ferguson singled to lead off the inning and later came in to score an a Charger error to cut the lead to 5-1.
The Chargers went up 9-1 with a four run sixth inning on five hits. Ryan singled to lead off the inning and advanced to third on back to back singles by Robinson and Brown. Maloney cleared the bases with a double and scored on the RBI double by Munoz.
The Lions fought back with a five run seventh inning on six hits and one Charger error to cut the lead to 9-6. In the bottom of the eighth Dowling added a run as Kevin Reese led off the inning with a single and came into score on an RBI single by Colin Barnathan as the Chargers went on to the 9-7 victory.
Brown finished the game with three hit and three runs scored. Maloney went 2-4 with 4 RBIs. Starter DJ Stinsman (Egg Harbor Twp, NJ) picked up the win after going 6 1/3 innings and allowing five runs on 10 hits. Freshman Andrew Distelhurst (Bardonia, NY) got the save after pitching the ninth inning.
Dominican is back in action on Friday when they take on Souther Connecticut State University in a double-header.
