#1 CHARGERS BASEBALL DEFEAT CALDWELL COLLEGE

Caldwell, NJ (4/28/09) The Dominican College baseball team, ranked #1 in the NCAA East Region, wrapped up the season series sweep of Caldwell College with a 9-1 victory this afternoon at Smith Field.

Caldwell, NJ (4/28/09)  The Dominican College baseball team, ranked #1 in the NCAA East Region, wrapped up the season series sweep of Caldwell College with a 9-1 victory this afternoon at Smith Field.

The Chargers scored an unearned run in the first as CACC Rookie of the Week, Alexi Colon (Millville, NJ) came in on a Cougar error to take a 1-0 lead.  DC continued on the offensive with a four-run second inning as sophomore shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) delivered a two-run single to right field and Colon blasted a two-run home run to left field to extend the lead to 5-0.

DC added four more runs in the seventh as junior firstbasemen Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) had an RBI single to right field, Yordis Veras (Jamaica, NY) scored as Maloney stole second base and pinch hitter Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) had an RBI single to left field.  Mortellaro later came in to score on a Caldwell error for a 9-0 lead.

The Cougars scored their only run in the ninth as Dominican won their 16th consecutive game with the 9-1 victory.

Sophomore Tom Kahl (Bay Shore, NY) improved to 5-0 with the win, scattering just five hits and nine strikeouts in seven innings of work.  Sophomore Dominick Ruscitti (Chester, NY) and freshman  Eliezer Cordero (Bridgeport, CT) came in to pitch the eighth and ninth for the Chargers.

Dominican improves to 31-9 overall and 19-5 in the CACC with the victory.
