#1 CHARGERS BASEBALL TURN BACK ST. THOMAS AQUINAS COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/30/09) The Dominican College baseball team, ranked #1 in the NCAA East Region, turned back the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans, 9-4 this afternoon in a non-conference game at Veteran's Memorial Park.

Dominican tallied three runs in the fourth as designated hitter Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) hit an RBI single to left center to plate Yordis Veras (Jamaica, NY), who led the inning off with a walk. A Spartan fielding error allowed Munoz to advance to second and junior Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY), who also received a free pass, to score. A sacrifice fly ball to right field by third basemen Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) brought in Munoz and gave the Chargers a 3-0 lead.
STAC got a run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI infield hit by senior John Garvey (Brooklyn, NY).
DC got the run back in bottom stanza on an RBI single up the middle by Veras to bring in catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) who had led the inning off with a walk to bring the lead back up to three runs. Veras proceeded to steal second and third and came in on the RBI single to right by Maloney to extend the Charger lead to 5-1.
The Chargers added a run in the sixth on the sacrifice fly ball to center by sophomore Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) with the bases loaded which brought in Mann and increased the DC lead to 6-1. An RBI single by right fielder Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) in the seventh put Dominican up 7-1.
An RBI double down the left field line by Iglesias and a sacrifice fly ball to right by Veras in the eighth gave DC the 9-1 victory.
Senior Brian Craig (Shenandoah, PA) improved ot 6-2 on the year in seven innings of work, allowing one run on five hits and five strikeouts. Dominick Ruscitti (Chester, NY) came in to pitch the eighth and junior Chris Perrin (Oakville, CT) pitched the ninth.
Shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) led the Chargers with three hits, while Veras had four stolen bases, two hits and two RBIs and Maloney had two stolen bases.
With the victory Dominican improves to 32-10 on the season.
