TOP SEEDED CHARGERS BASEBALL DEFEAT #2 BLOOMFIELD COLLEGE
New Castle, DE (5/8/09) The top-seeded Dominican College baseball team eliminated the second-seeded Deacons of Bloomfield College from the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) this afternoon after posting an 8-5 victory at Frawley Stadium.
New Castle, DE (5/8/09) The top-seeded Dominican College baseball team eliminated the second-seeded Deacons of Bloomfield College from the 2009 Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) this afternoon after posting an 8-5 victory at Frawley Stadium.
In the elimination game, the Deacons took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI groundout. Dominican responded in the bottom stanza with a run as junior Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) reached on a fielder's choice and later scored on a passed ball to knot the game at 1-1.
The Deacons had a four-run fifth inning to take a 5-1 lead on a two run single, a wild pitch and a one-out single through the left side. The Chargers scored a run in the sixth on an RBI single down the left field line by catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) which platted Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) who had led off the inning with a walk.
DC added two runs in the seventh as designated hitter Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) reached on a fielder's choice that brought in a run and later scored on a wild pitch to cut the Deacon lead to 5-4. Dominican rallied for four runs in the eighth as they led off the inning with three straight singles to load the bases and second basemen Yordis Veras (East Elmhurst, NY) drew an RBI walk. First basemen Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) was hit by a pitch to plate a run and Robinson delivered a two-out two-run single to give DC an 8-5 lead and eventual victory.
Starter Brian Craig (Shenandoah, PA) went five innings in the no decision, allowing five runs on six hits and three strkeouts. Reliever Jack Crawford (Montgomery, NY) got the win in three innings of relief, scattering just one hit and three strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the year. CACC Rookie of the Year, Justin Moore (Wantagh, NY), got his 15th save of the season as he pitched the ninth inning.
With the win Dominican now stands at 36-11 overall and will face #4 Nyack College tomorrow at 11am at Frawley Stadium. The winner of that game will face #3 Wilmington University.
