TOP SEEDED CHARGERS BASEBALL FALL TO SIXTH SEEDED WILDCATS AT NCAA EAST REGIONALS
Rindge, NH (5/14/09) The top seeded Dominican College baseball team fell to the sixth seeded Wilmington University Wildcats, 10-1 this morning in the opening game of the 2009 NCAA Division II Baseball Championship East Regionals being held at Franklin Pierce University.

The Wildcats took a 2-0 lead in the second as pitcher Mike Godwin (Hockessin, DE) led off the inning with a double to left center. He came in to score a batter later as left fielder Jordan Oncay (Newark, DE) had an RBI triple down the left field line. Oncay scored on a wild pitch.
DC put a run on the board in the bottom of the second as third basemen Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) led off the inning with an infield single to third. He moved to second as right fielder Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) received a free pass after getting hit and second basemen Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Left fielder Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) walked to load the bases and catcher Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) hit a sacrifice fly ball to center to plate Munoz and cut the deficit to 2-1.
The ‘Cats rebuilt a 5-1 lead in the fourth as centerfielder Matt Botting (Newark, DE) hit a two-out two run homer to right field and shortstop JT Gregory (Woodbridge, VA) later followed with a one-out solo home run over the left field fence.
In the top of the ninth, WU had the bases loaded with no outs and scored a run on a DC error, followed by an RBI single to right to take a 7-1 lead. An RBI single to left field and a wild pitch brought in a run to extend the ‘Cat lead to 9-1. Their final run came in on a fielder's choice for a 10-1 WU victory.
Godwin got the win (5-1) in seven innings of work, allowing one run on six hits and five strikeouts.
Sophomore Tom Kahl (Bay Shore, NY) suffered the loss (6-2) allowing six runs (five earned) on nine hits and five strikeouts.
Wilmington (28-27) advances into the winner's bracket and will play the loser of #4 Dowling/#3 Adelphi tomorrow at 2:30pm.
Dominican will take on the loser of the #5 Assumption/#2 Franklin Pierce tomorrow at 11am in an elimination game.
