Rindge, NH (5/15/09) The #1 Dominican College Chargers baseball team defeated the #2 Ravens of Franklin Pierce University in an elimination game of the 2009 NCAA Division II Baseball Championships East Regional Tournament this afternoon at Dr. Arthur and Martha Pappas Field.
The Ravens struck for three runs in the bottom of the first as designated hitter Derek Ingui (Sterling, MA) led off the inning with a single through the left side. Mike Dowd (East Bridgewater, MA) reached base as the Chargers tried to get the lead runner and a throwing error led to both being safe. An RBI single by Ted Lerud (Hampden, MA) brought in Ingui and Dowd came in on the sacrifice fly ball to center by Cliff Hicks (Merrimack, NH). The third run came in on an RBI groundout by first basemen Steve Carr (Nahant, MA).
Dominican got a run back in the second as right fielder Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) led off the inning with a single to left center and moved to second on the infield single by junior Willie Mann (Patterson, NY). A Raven throwing error allowed Robinson to move to third on the play and he came in on the double play ground-out by shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM).
The Chargers struck for three runs in the third as left fielder Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) led off the inning with a single to left and then stole second base. A walk to freshman Alexi Colon (Millville, NJ) put two on. Designated hitter Yordis Veras (Jamaica, NY) laid down a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by the Raven third basemen allowed Berrios to come in to score. Colon came in to score on a wildpitch and an RBI single to right field by third basemen Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) platted Veras and gave DC a 4-3 lead.
FPU tied the game in the bottom stanza on the RBI double down the left field line by Hicks to bring in Lerud, who had gotten a one out single to left field.
DC scored the game winning run in the top of the ninth as Lopez hit a key two-out double to right center field. Catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) had an infield single, but a Raven throwing error allowed him to move to second and Lopez to score for the 5-4 DC victory.
Dominican improves to 38-13 overall, while Franklin Pierce ends their season with a 37-18 record.
Dominican's victory eliminates the second-seeded Ravens from the East Regional Tournament. DC will take on an opponent to be determined tomorrow at 6:30 pm at Pappas Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University
