Orangeburg, NY (3/29/11) The Dominican College baseball team improved to 4-0 in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) play and 10-6 overall after defeating the visiting Clippers of Concordia College, 1-0 and 4-3 this afternoon in a CACC double-header held at Veteran's Memorial Park.
Game One: Game was scoreless until the eighth inning when DC struck for a run as Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) drew a walk to lead off the inning and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by Michael Levy, Jr (Salisbury Mill, NY). Senior second basemen Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) delivered a single down the left field line to score Bonilla and give the Chargers a 1-0 lead.
With two runners on with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Clippers tried to score from second after a single to right and senior Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) made the accurate throw to the plate to get the runner and give Dominican the victory.
Starter Dave Bartuska (Duryea, PA) pitched eight 2/3 innings in the shut out victory, allowing seven hits and collecting eight strikeouts. Greg Gonzalez (Franklin Square, NY) picked up his second save of the season.
Robinson finished game one with two hits.
Game Two: The Chargers struck for a run in the bottom of the first inning as Lopez walked and Robinson singled up-the-middle to put two runners on base. A fielder's choice off the bat of Andrew Camaradella (Pelham, NY) got the runner out going to second, but a CC throwing error allowed Lopez to score to give DC the 1-0 lead.
Concordia came back with a run in the top of the fourth to tie the score at 1-1, but a three run bottom half of the fifth inning re-claimed a 4-1 DC lead. Bonilla led off the inning with a double to field and a sacrifice fly ball by Christopher Gonzalez (Bronx, NY) moved him to third base. A single to left field by Levy brought home Bonilla. Lopez singled through the right side and Robinson doubled to right field to bring in Levy. After a ground ball out, back-to-back walks to Marco Moreno (Miami, FL) and Dru Kayfus (Boynton Beach, FL) allowed Lopez to score and give the Chargers a 4-1 lead.
A two-run seventh inning cut the Charger lead to 4-3, but reliever Dustin Javins (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) came in to pitch a 1-2-3 ninth inning to secure a 4-3 victory and recorded his first save of the season.
Robinson and Bonilla each collected two hits in game two.
Starter Richard Leachy (Brookfield, WI) got his first win of the season (1-3) in five innings of work, allowing one run on four hits and three strikeouts. Caleb Whiteley (San Antonio, TX) pitched one inning, allowing two runs (none earned) on one hit, while Ryan Calby (Huntington Station, NY) pitched two innings and allowed only one hit.
