Pomona, N.Y. (4/21/15) The Dominican College baseball team rallied from a 7-3 deficit to defeat the visiting Lions of Molloy College, 9-8, this evening in a non-conference game played at Provident Bank Park. With the win, Dominican improves to 14-19 overall.
The Chargers trailed 7-1 after three and a half innings of play when the bats started to come alive. DC put two runs on the board in their half of the fourth on a one out two-run double down the left field line from Mark Vargas (Bronx, N.Y.). Dominican added two more runs in the fifth on the single up-the-middle from first basemen Carlos Lopez (Miami, Fla.) to cut the deficit to 7-5.
Dominican took their first lead of the game in the sixth as they brought home four runs on four hits. Right fielder Brendan Woodruff (Cincinnati, Ohio) doubled home a run down the right field line and two batters later designated player Jayson Gray (New Rochelle, N.Y.) hit a run-scoring single up-the-middle. An RBI ground out from Lopez and an infield single off the bat of Rafael Balado (San Juan, Puerto Rico) allowed the fourth Charger run of the inning to score and put them ahead 9-7.
Molloy would threaten with a run in the ninth and the tying run on third, but closer Corey Pic (Montvale, N.J.) got the final batter to ground out for the 9-8 win.
As a team, the Charger offense produced 12 hits.
Woodruff and Gray each had two hits and scored two runs in the win.
Vargas finished with two RBIs.
Reliever Colin Taylor (Coral Springs, Fla.) picked up the win (1-1) 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing two runs on six hits. Starter Peter Ginter (Davie, Fla.) went 2 2/3 innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on six hits and two strikeouts.
Pic earned his team leading fifth save of the season.
Dominican is set to be in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action tomorrow afternoon as they travel to rival Nyack College for two games.
