Orangeburg, NY (11/19/08) The Dominican College men's basketball team defeated non-conference opponent, Molloy College, 104-93 this evening on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.
The first half saw the Lions jump out to an early 12-6 lead, but Dominican turned the tables with a 20-8 run over a five minute span to take a 26-20 lead with 9:32 remaining in the half. MC tied the game at 39-39 with 3:35 to go but dominican closed out the half with a 7-3 run to lead 46-42 at the intermission. Junior Brendan McManus (Pearl River, NY) netted 12 points (3-5 from the three point arc) and four rebounds in the half, while senior Dato Sakvarelidze (Tbilisi, GA) netted 11 points.
The Chargers never trailed in the second half, although the Lions cut the deficit to one point three times in the half. Dominican lead by as many as 20 points (94-74) with 3:32 to go in the game.
Dominican was led by senior guard Will Carty (Bronx, NY) with 23 points (going 4-5 from three point land) and five assists. McManus finished with a career high 19 points and six boards, while Sakvarelidze netted 18 points in the win. Sophomore Kris Knez (Astoria, NY) contributed 10 points off the bench, while Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY) had a team leading eight assists and Abdul Sulaiman (Bronx, NY) had a team leading nine caroms.
Molloy was led by junior forward Girard Fitts (Uniondale, NY) with 24 points and six rebounds. Carl Palmer (Brooklyn, NY) netted 14 points, while Chris Manning (Queens, NY) netted 13 points and a game leading 12 assists in the loss. Starter Tolulade Jegede (Elmont, NY) contributed 11 points and seven caroms, while Matt Wafula (Harlem, NY) and Ian Thomas-Minor (Brooklyn, NY) each had 10 points.
With the win Dominican improves to 2-1 overall, while Molloy falls to 1-1.
Dominican is back in action on Friday at the Fairfield Inn Classic hosted by Nyack College. DC squares off against New York Institute of Technology on Friday at 5pm and will face Queens College on Saturday at 2pm.
Dominican travels to Molloy College next Tuesday for a 7pm non-conference game.
