The Bears jumped out to a 9-2 lead but Dominican battled back with a 9-4 run to cut the lead to 15-14 with 15:35 left in the half. NYIT regained a six point advantage but DC once again rallied this time with an 11-1 run, capped over by a bucket from sophomore Kris Knez (Astoria, NY) as the Chargers took their first lead of the game, 28-24 with 7:59 left before the break.
Dominican built up a six point lead, 34-28, with 5:12 to go, but the Bears put together a 10-4 run to once again knot the contest at 38-38. A layup by senior Dato Sakvarelidze (Tbilisi, GA) at the buzzer put the Chargers up 42-40 at the break.
In the second half, NYIT turned the tables and held a 65-58 lead with 6:46 remaining when Dominican went on a 7-0 run for the seventh tie of the game at 65-65. A big three point basket by Daniel Cox with 1:17 left gave the Bears a 73-69 lead en route to the 75-71 victory.
Seniors Will Carty (Bronx, NY) and Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY) both led the Chargers with 13 points each. Sakvarelidze finished with six points and a team leading seven rebounds, while Damien Davis (Windsor, CT) and Zach Huston (Johnson City, NY) each netted eight points in the loss.
The Bears were led by Mickell Vickers with 24 points. Bryant Lassiter had the game's only double-double wit 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Cox finished with 13 points.
With the loss Dominican falls to 2-2 on the year.
The Chargers return to the Fairfield Inn Classic tomorrow when they take on Queens College at 2pm.
