With the win the River Hawks improve to 5-3 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 4-4 overall.
The River Hawks jumped out to a 21-6 lead with 11:14 remaining in the first half, capped off by a three point bucket by junior Craig Heatherly (Mishawaka, IN) and went into the intermission with a 42-26 lead. Junior foward Victor Colon (Chicago, IL) led all scorers in the ahlf with 19 points (8-10 from the floor) and seven rebounds.
Eight minutes into the second half, Dominican cut the lead to 42-48 on a layup by senior Dato Sakvarelidze (Tbilisi, GA) off the dish by senior Brandon Brock (Newburgh, NY). The River Hawks responded with a 14-3 run to regain a 17 point advantage with just under ten and a half minutes left in the game.
The Chargers once again cut the lead to six points, 60-66 with 1:08 to go on two free throws by freshman Elliot Watson (Peekskill, NY) but UMASS-Lowell hung on for the 70-64 victory.
Colon led the River Hawks with the game's only double-double, scoring 28 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Junior guard Kevin Carr (Lancaster, OH) netted 17 points.
Senior guard Will Carty (Bronx, NY) led the Chargers with 17 points and three assists. Watson finished with eight points and six caroms off the bench, while Brock also had six rebounds.
The Chargers are back in action on Monday, December 15th as they travel to Hilo, Hawaii to face the University of Hawaii-Hilo in a non-conference game slated to begin at 7:30 pm.
