WOLVES HANG ON TO DEFEAT CHARGERS BASKETBALL
Monmouth, OR (11/19/10) The Dominican College men's basketball team rallied from a ten point deficit to trail by one with 1:02 left in regulation, but the Western Oregon Wolves held on for the 76-72 victory this evening in the final game of day one of the 2010 WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout being held at the New PE Building.
Monmouth, OR (11/19/10) The Dominican College men's basketball team rallied from a ten point deficit to trail by one with 1:02 left in regulation, but the Western Oregon Wolves held on for the 76-72 victory this evening in the final game of day one of the 2010 WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout being held at the New PE Building.
Tied 16-16 with 10:42 remaining before the intermission, DC used a 7-2 spurt on a three point bucket from Ginyard and two layups from senior center Almin Hodzic (Budd Lake, NJ) to take a 23-19 lead with advantage with 7:40 on the clock.
WOU closed out the first half outscoring the Chargers, 12-8 for a 35-31 advantage at the break.
The Chargers tralied 57-50 with 8:50 in the second half when sophomore guard Leon Porter (Laurel, MD) scored five consecutive points to cut the lead to 57-50 with just under eight minutes to go. The Wolves responded by going on an 11-1 run over the next three plus minutes to rebuild a 68-56 lead.
Trailing 70-60 with 3:40 remaining, the Chargers went on a 9-0 run, capped off by a key three point basket from freshman guard Khaleev Ginyard (Brentwood, NY) with 1:02 on the clock to cut the lead to 70-69. Forced to foul, the Wolves went 6-6 from the charity stripe to take a 76-69 lead and Ginyard closed out the game with a three point shot with 0:03 left in the game for the 76-72 final score.
Sophomore Gerald Hill (Gwynn Oak, MD) led five players in double figures with 16 points and added five rebounds. Junior Michael Calzonetti (Gloucester, NJ) tallied 14 points and a game leading nine rebounds, while Ginyard finished with 13 points, with 12 of those points coming from beyond the three point arc.
Hozdic netted 12 points, shooting 6-10 from the floor and Porter scored 10 points and had a game leading 10 assists.
With the loss Dominican falls to 0-3 on the season.
DC takes on Saint Martn's University tomorrow at 4pm at the WOU/Phoenix Inn D2 Shootout.
