CHARGERS TAKE SEASON OPENER IN FIVE SETS OVER MERRIMACK COLLEGE
Orangeburg, N.Y. (1/9/26) The Dominican University New York men's volleyball team opened the 2026 season with a five set victory over Merrimack College on Coach Baxter Court.
Dominican improves to 1-0 overall while MC falls to 0-1 overall.
The Chargers opened the match with a 25-20 victory for a 1-0 match lead. Merrimack outlasted the Chargers in a comeback effort in the second set 29-27 to even the match.
Merrimack followed up the second set with a 25-23 victory in the third to take a 2-1 advantage.
Dominican jumped ahead by seven points late in the fourth set and held off a late push by Merrimack to force a decisive fifth set.
Dominican trailed 8-5 in the fifth set but rallied as they outscored MC 10-5 and closed out the victory.
Junior Phinehas Wiley recorded a team-high 22 kills while adding three total blocks and two service aces for a total of 26.0 points. Junior Ayden Shaw picked up 13 kills while adding nine digs.
Freshman Jackson Shaw finished with eight kills and added four block assists while Tommaso Falchi also picked up four total blocks. Sophomore Luke Gavin-Ruple recorded one solo block and five block assists for a team-high six total blocks.
The Chargers wrap up their opening weekend home and home set with Merrimack College tomorrow at 6:00 PM.
