SOFTBALL ELIMINATED FROM NCAA EAST REGIONAL
Syracuse, NY (5/9/09) The eighth seeded Dominican College softball team was eliminated from the 2009 NCAA East Regional Tournament after suffering a tough, 1-0 loss in eight innings to the fifth seeded Dowling College Lions this afternoon at the Niland Athletic Complex on the campus of Le Moyne College.
Syracuse, NY (5/9/09) The eighth seeded Dominican College softball team was eliminated from the 2009 NCAA East Regional Tournament after suffering a tough, 1-0 loss in eight innings to the fifth seeded Dowling College Lions this afternoon at the Niland Athletic Complex on the campus of Le Moyne College.
The Lions scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single down the left field line to take an early 1-0 lead.
Dominican evened the score in the top of the fourth as sophomore catcher Nicole Scarillo (South Amboy, NJ) hit her second home run of the tournament over the left centerfield fence.
In the bottom of the seventh Dowling led off the inning with back to back doubles, but left fielder senior Sarah Beck (Milton, NY) got the ball to shortstop Cara Piasecki (Port Monmouth, NJ) who throw the ball home and Scarillo applied the tag for the first out of the inning. The next batter a hit soft ground ball to short, but Piasecki came charging in and threw home to get the runner out at the plate. Freshman hurler Katrina Pistilli (Staten Island, NY) got the next batter to ground out to third to force the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, Dowling got back to back singles and the lead runner came in to score on the RBI single to left field for the 2-1 victory.
Pistilli took the loss (20-8), allowing two runs on eight hits and five strikeouts.
Dowling advances to a second elimination game against the fourth seeded Cougars of Caldwell College, who had lost to host Le Moyne College in the day's first game. The winner will take on the top seeded Dolphins and must beat them twice to advance to the Super Regional next weekend.
Dominican ends the season with a 39-16 record and earned the program's first ever NCAA Tournament berth.
