Orangeburg, N.Y. (3/28/26) The Dominican University New York softball team split a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) doubleheader against Wilmington University in games played today at the DUNY Softbal Field. The Lady Chargers rallied to win the opener, 7-5, while the Wildcats brought home a 10-0 six-inning win in game two.
Following the split, the Lady Chargers now stand at 2-16 overall and 1-3 in conference play.
Game One: The game was scoreless until the 'Cats struck for a run in the third and added three more runs in the fourth for the 4-0 lead. Dominican got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth on the run-scoring single off the bat of Nicole Mata to cut the deficit to 4-1.
The Lady Chargers added two more runs in the fifth on the RBI singles from Emily Angulo and Victoria Iorio to pull within a run, 4-3.
Wilmington regained a two-run lead in the sixth, but in the bottom of the sixth junior Layla Albarran blasted a grand slam homer run to left centerfield to give the Lady Chargers their first lead and eventual victory, 7-5.
Mata, Albarran and sophomore Kindel Johnson all had two hits in the win, with Albarran picking up four RBIs.
Gianna Longo earned the complete game victory.
Game Two: The nightcap belonged to the Wildcats as they scored 10 runs on 14 hits en route to the 10-0 win in six innings.
Mata, Angulo and centerfielder Deja Robinson had hits for the Lady Chargers.
Starter Iorio took the loss.
Dominican returns to action on Wednesday, April 1st when they travel to Felician University.
