UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN RALLY TO DEFEAT LADY CHARGERS BASKETBALL IN OVERTIME
Orangeburg, NY (1/8/09) The University of New Haven Chargers used a 14 point performance in overtime as they rallied to defeat host Dominican College 84-79 this evening in a non-conference game on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.

The Lady Chargers led 36-31 at the break behind a 10 point performance from senior guard Althea Chambers (Yonkers, NY). Guard Dominique Stellmacher (New Britain, CT) paced UNH with 10 points and five rebounds as the Chargers shot 11-32 (34.4%) from the floor and just 1-9 (11.1%) from the three point line. DC was 15-34 (44.1%) from the floor and just 1-6 (16.7%) from beyond the three point line.
In the second half, UNH led things off with 9-0 run to take a 40-36 lead. Dominican quickly regained a one point advante three minutes later, but the Chargers once again built up a three point lead and led by as many as six points (64-58) with 7:25 left in the game. The Lady Chargers used an 8-2 spurt to tie the game at 66-66. DC led by two (70-68) with 3:00 left in regulation but Alysia Saunders (Bronx, NY) went to the line twice in a span of a minute and a half and converted two of four attempts to tie teh game at 70-70. A Dominican turnover led to a last second layup attempt by UNH but they were unable to convert and the game went into overtime.
As the team swapped baskets in the beginning over the overtime, UNJ pulled ahead in the last 1:13 with a 5-0 run as they went on to the 84-79 victory.
Senior forward Lauren Hood (Ashland, MA) led UNH with 18 points, while Saunders finished with 16 points and 10 caroms. Stellmacher netted 15 points and seven points, while Helin Marte (Woodhaven, NY) chipped in 14 points and three steals and Briiana Rende (Auguste, ME) had 11 points and four assists in the win.
Chambers and junior forward Adele Laskowski (Wayne, NJ) led Dominican with 22 points each and combined for nine rebounds. Senior center Shalissa Burgess (Englewood, NJ) netted 10 points and seven rebounds, while freshman forward Marley Klunk (York, PA) had eight points and seven caroms in the loss.
With the victory UNH improves to 10-4 overall while DC falls to 5-7 on the season.
Dominican is back in action on Saturday when they host Goldey-Beacom College in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) women's basketball action on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Game time is set for 1pm.
