NYACK, DOWLING WIN ON DAY ONE OF THE DC WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT
Orangeburg, NY (11/15/08) Nyack College and Dowling College opened up their 2008-09 seasons with wins at the DC Women's Basketball Tip-Off Tournament this afternoon on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Nyack turned back Saint Anselm College, 54-51, while Dowling rallied to defeat host Dominican College, 67-64 in the second game.

Nyack turned back Saint Anselm College, 54-51, while Dowling rallied to defeat host Dominican College, 67-64 in the second game.
In the opening game, Nyack held a 31-22 lead at the intermission behind Victoria Sweet's (Harlem, NY) 12 points.
The Warriors opened up the second half with a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 40-26, but the Hawks battled back to cut the deficit to four points (48-44) with just under five minutes remaining. Saint Anselm knotted the game at 48-48 on a jumper by sophomore guard Katie Larkin (Goffstown, NH) and took a three point lead (51-48) on a shot by Haley Poupore (Malone, NY). Trailing by one point with thirty seconds left in the game, Christy Porter (Highland, NY) netted a layup to put the Warriors back up by one point and Kelsy McIntosh (North Pole, AK) put the game away with two free throws as the Warriors won, 54-51.
Sweet led all scorers with 20 points, while McIntosh finished with 13 points for the Warriors. The Hawks were led by Poupore with 15 points, while Megan Howard (St. Paul, MN) added 14 points in the loss.
In the second game, Dowling took an early 19-11 lead but the Lady Chargers answered back with an 12-0 run to take a 22-19 lead with 7:38 left in the first half and later closed out the half with a 11-3 run to take a 37-31 lead at the half.
In the second half, the Lady Chargers built up a ten point advantage (45-35), but the Golden Lions went on a 14-5 tear to cut the lead to 50-49 and then went ahead with two free throws by Simona Bartkova (Greve, Denmark) and never looked back en route to teh 67-64 victory.
Bartkova led all scorers with 18 points and 13 boards, while Molly Tubridy netted 16 points and Kelly Puwalksi (Queens, NY) added 13 points. Michele Yawn (Walker, LA) led the game with 16 rebounds.
The Lady Chargers were led by junior guard Rachelle Sainten (Spring Valley, NY) with 17 points, while senior Althea Chambers (Yonkers, NY) added 16 points and a team leading nine rebounds in teh loss.
With the wins Nyack and Dowling improve to 1-0 on the season, while Saint Anselm and Dominican fall to 0-1.
Tomorrow's games feature Saint Anselm College taking on host Dominican College at 2pm, while Dowling will take on Nyack at 4pm.
