WOMEN'S BASKETBALL UPENDS CALDWELL COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (12/2/09) The Dominican College women's basketball team won their 2009-2010 home opener after defeating the Cougars of Caldwell College, 77-72 this evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center.

The Lady Chargers led 21-15 with 9:42 left before the break when a 12-5 spurt gave them a 33-20 lead and they cruised into the break with a 37-25 lead.
Dominican led by as many as 13 points with under 12 minutes remaining in the second stanza when the Cougars went on a 19-6 scoring tear to tie the game at 63-a-piece with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. Tied 72-72 with 1:08 to go Rachelle Sainten (Spring Valley, NY) completed the and-one after a layup to put DC up 75-72 and Shannon Lavelle (Floral Park, NY) closed out the game with two free throws for the 77-72 Lady Charger victory.
Sainten led three Lady Chargers with a career high 27 points (12-14 from the floor) and grabbed seven rebounds off the bench. Sophomore guard Meghan Murphy (Carmel, NY) netted 16 points, while rookie guard Lavelle scored 15 points in the win. Sainten netted 13 points, while Murphy had 10 points in the half. Senior forward Adele Laskowski (Wayne, NJ) had a game leading nine rebounds.
Junior guard Kirsty Leedham (Ellesmere Port, England) and freshman Torey Jones (North Providence, RI) led the Cougars with 12 points-a-piece in the loss. Freshman center Gillian Felix (Mahopac, NY) scored 12 points, while all three combined for 18 rebounds.
With the victory Dominican improves to 2-2 overall and 1-0 in the CACC, while Caldwell falls to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the CACC.
Dominican is back in action next Tuesday when they travel to Post University in CACC women's action. Game time is slated for 6pm.
