WOMEN'S LACROSSE RALLY TO DEFEAT HOLY FAMILY UNIVERSITY
Orangeburg, NY (4/17/10) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University, 12-9, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Senior Day at the DC Lacrosse Field.
Orangeburg, NY (4/17/10) The Dominican College women's lacrosse team rallied from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the visiting Tigers of Holy Family University, 12-9, in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) action on Senior Day at the DC Lacrosse Field.
The Tigers opened the game with seven consecutive goals to take a 7-0 lead with 11:15 remaining in the first half. The Lady Chargets tallied their first goal of the game as freshman Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) converted a free position attempt with 8:37 left in the first half. Freshman Elizabeth Schmidt (Montgomery, NY) tallied her first goal of the game off the assist from Fiorvanti to close out the scoring in the first half and cut the deficit to 7-2.
Dominican opened things up in the second half with junior Silje Karlsen (Vernon, NJ) netting a goal off the dish from Sarah Kiernan (Saugerties, NY) just 0:43 seconds into the second half. A Holy Family goal regained a five goal lead, but DC answered with a goal off the stick of Kimberly Nunez (Fair Lawn, NJ) with the assist credited to sophomore Aubree Williams (Great Meadows, NJ).
The Tigers roared right back with a goal to extend their lead to 9-4, but the Lady Chargers responded and charged back with eight unanswered goals in the final 20:50 of the game to rally to the 12-9 victory. The first goal of the run came at 20:50 as Fiorvanti recorded her second goal of the game off the assist from Karlsen. A little over two minutes later Kiernan netted her first goal of the game off the pass from Schmidt to make the score 9-6. Three minutes and six seconds later attacker Amanda Matos (Vernon, NJ) scored her first goal of the game on a free position attempt to bring DC within two goals, 9-7.
Fiorvanti completed the hat trick with an unassisted goal twenty seconds late to cut the Tiger lead to a goal, 9-8. Williams then followed with back to back free position goals to give the Lady Chargers their first lead of the game, 10-9 with 10:32 left in regulation.
Nunez netted her second goal of the game off the assist from Williams and Karlsen tallied an unassisted goal with 1:28 to go en route to the 12-9 victory.
Lady Charger goalie Lindsey Grundfast (Saugerties, NY) made 10 saves in the victory.
With the win Dominican improves to 5-7 overall and4-6 in the CACC.
Before the game the team honored seniors Megan Bryant, Nikkia Greczynski, Amanda Miller and Grundfast.
