Newark, Del. (4/2/16) The Wilmington University Wildcats edged the visiting Lady Chargers of Dominican College, 10-9, this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) game played at the WU Athletics Complex.
The Lady Chargers struck first with the game's opening as junior attacker Haliann Fitzgerald (Walden, N.Y.) netted the unassisted goal just one minute and eight seconds into the game.
Following a 2-0 spurt by the 'Cats (1-7, 1-1 CACC), Fitzgerald scored again on the assist from junior Amber June (Stony Point, N.Y.) to tie the game at 2-2 with 19:56 remaining in the first half.
June would score the final goal of the half with 7:37 on the clock off the pass from Fitzgerald to cut the WU lead to 4-3.
The Dominican (0-8. 0-2 CACC) offense came charging out of the locker room as they began the second half with three unanswered goals.
Brandi Clay (Meriches, N.Y.) started the run with a free position goal and almost four minutes later Shayne Gallagher (Blauvelt, N.Y.) followed with an unassisted goal. June completed the run with her second goal from Fitzgerald on a man-up opportunity to put DC ahead 6-4.
WU countered with two straight goals to re-tie the score, but Fitzgerald regained the lead for Dominican with three consecutive goals, following passes from Clay, June and Gallagher, to go ahead 9-6 with 7:21 to go.
WU rallied with a 4-0 run over the remaining seven plus minutes for the 10-9 victory.
Fitzgerald tied her career high with five goals and added two assists for seven game points.
June finished with two goals and two assists for four points.
Lady Charger goalie Brittany Kiernan* (Stony Point, N.Y.) had six saves in the loss.
DC returns to action on Tuesday afternoon as they host Chestnut Hill College in CACC action. Game time is set for 4pm at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.
