LADY CHARGERS VOLLEYBALL LOSE SEASON OPENER TO SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY
New Haven, CT (8/30/09) The Dominican College women's volleyball team opened up the 2009 season with a non-conference loss to host, Southern Connecticut State University, 3-0 this afternoon. The Owls won the first and second set, 25-18, and took the final set, 25-16.
New Haven, CT (8/30/09) The Dominican College women's volleyball team opened up the 2009 season with a non-conference loss to host, Southern Connecticut State University, 3-0 this afternoon. The Owls won the first and second set, 25-18, and took the final set, 25-16.
The Owls opened up the first set with three consecutive points, but the lady Chargers rallied with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 4-4 and was able to rally again to tie the set at 10-10. SCSU closed out the first set with a 15-8 run en route to the 25-18 win.
The second set was a close knit battle with the lead never being more then two points. With the set tied 17-17, the Owls went on a 7-1 run as they took the set 25-18.
The Lady Chargers opened up the third set with two quick points, but SCSU took a 10-4 advantage to build up a 10-6 lead as they went on to the 25-16 set victory and 3-0 match win.
Freshman Kristen Loney (Pine Bush, NY) led the Lady Chargers with 9 kills on the day for a .353 hitting percentage. Fellow freshman Courtney Heard (Ventura, CA), Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) and Michelle Klimas (Thornwood, NY) all had three kills each in the loss. Freshman setter N'Jameh Philip (Monroe, NY) collected 15 assists, while junior libero Catherine Giordano (Stony Point, NY) led the team with 13 digs.
With the loss Dominican falls to 0-1 on the season, while SCSU improves to 3-0.
DC is back in action on Tuesday as they host the College of Saint Rose in a non-conference match on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Game time is set for 7pm.
