VOLLEYBALL LOSES TO NYIT
Old Westbury, NY (9/22/10) The Dominican College women's volleyball team lost their fifth consecutive match this evening as host, New York Institute of Technology, defeated the Lady Chargers, 3-1 (19-25, 25-23, 16-25, 21-25) this evening at Recreation Hall.

Sophomore outside hitter Michelle Fiorvanti (Commack, NY) led the team with seven kills. Senior Yashani Smith (West Haverstraw, NY) added six kills, while setter Whitney Ranger (Ventura, CA) tallied 19 assists. Jordyn Fuller (Keller, TX) recorded a team leading 11 defensive digs with Fiorvanti adding 10 digs.
Dominican opened the match with a 4-1 lead, but the Bears rallied to tie the set at 5-5. Trailing 12-9, the Lady Chargers put together a rally of their own to tie the score at 13-13. DC kept right in the set, trailing no more than three points, but four straight points by NYIT secured a 25-19 set win.
DC held a 17-15 lead in set two, but a 5-1 run by the Bears put them ahead 19-18. Dominican answered right back with a 6-1 run to regain a 24-20 advantage, but a late rally by NYIT brought them to within a point at 23-24. Fiorvanti got the set winning kill to lift DC to the 25-23 lead and tie the set at 1-1.
The two teams battled point-for-point in set three with the score being tied three teams before the Bears pulled ahead with a 13-9 lead. A 7-2 run extended the NYIT to set point at 24-15, but a Lady Charger kill by Courtney Heard (Ventura, CA) broke the serve. However, NYIT then got the set win on a kill for a 2-1 match lead.
The decisive set saw similar action as set three, this time with five ties, until NYIT built up an 18-13 lead. Dominican rallied to cut the deficit to 22-20, but the Bears closed out the match with a 3-1 run for a 25-21 set win.
With the loss Dominican falls to 5-12 on the season.
