Charger Baseball Turns Back Mercy College, 5-1

The Chargers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as senior Mike Zani (Goshen, NY) walked to start the inning, followed by a single by shortstop Jose Made (Binghamton, NY). Keith Gebert (Brooklyn, NY) reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases and Eliezer Nunez (Brooklyn, NY) got a one walk, scoring Zani and giving the lead.
DC added to the leadin the second inning as Zani hit a one out single to center field and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Made reached on a Mercy error which allowed Zani to score and put Dominican up 2-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Frank Maynard, Jr (Brooklyn, NY) hit a sacrifice fly to center which brought home catcher Peter Gilardo (Cornwall, NY) who had led off the inning with a double to right to bring the lead up to 3-0 DC.
Mercy answered back with a run in the top of the seventh as Joe DeMuria (Islip, NY) singled to center with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Ryan Johnson (Saugerties, NY) followed with a double to left field as DeMuria came in to score and put the Flyers on the board, 3-1.
Dominican rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Jose Escalera (Bronx, NY) reached base on an error, followed by a walk to Nunez. With one out, Chad Duesler (Northville, NY) doubled to center field to score by Escalera and Nunez and increase the Charger lead to 5-1.
DC starter Nick Schreiber (Greencastle, PA) pitched eight innings, allowing nine hits and striking out four in his third win of the year. Brendan Bohan (Rutherford, NJ) pitched the ninth, allowing one hit.
Mercy starter Roberto Hillario (Sleepy Hollow, NY) suffered the loss.
DC is back in action tomorrow when they host Felician College for a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double header to be held at Veteran's Memorial Park.
