New Castle, DE (5/10/07) There was plenty of offense to go around during the first day of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) Baseball Tournament, as Wilmington College and Dominican College earned victories in two slug-fests at Wilson Field in New Castle, DE. Wilmington, the No. 2 seed, held off #3 Felician College, 14-11, while #4 Dominican upset top-seeded Caldwell College, 12-11. Wilmington and Dominican will meet at 3:00 pm Friday at Frawley Stadium, home of the Wilmington Blue Rocks, for the right to advance to the championship round of the tournament. Caldwell and Felician will play at noon in an elimination game.

In the second game of the day, freshman left fielder Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY), senior right fielder Jose Escalera (Bronx, NY) and senior first baseman Brian Smith (Stony Point, NY) all collected three hits in Dominican's 12-11 win over Caldwell (22-12). The teams combined for five home runs and each had 15 hits.

Dominican (19-17) scored their runs in bunches, plating six runs in the third inning and three each in the fourth and eighth frames. Escalera led the way with four RBI, while Maloney knocked in three runs. Junior righty Michael Mondesir (Jamaica, NY) earned the victory after coming out of the bullpen to allow one run and two hits in 3.0 innings of work. Junior right-hander Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) got the save by working the final two innings.

The top four hitters in the Cougar line-up provided most of the damage as freshman center fielder Omar Velazquez, junior shortstop Tommy Murphy, freshman left fielder Ray Keelan and freshman right fielder Adric Saxon combined to go 11-for-19 with eight runs scored and seven RBI. Murphy had four hits, four runs scored and two RBI, while Saxon drove in five runs.

Wilmington's 14-hit attack (27-18) was led by junior left fielder Spike Austin, who went 4-for-4 with two home runs, four runs scored and four RBI. Junior 3B Mike Wilson went 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored and junior DH Brian Testa homered and drove in five runs. In all, the teams combined for six home runs and nine doubles in the game.

Wilmington took control of the contest with four runs in the fourth inning and six more in the seventh to take a commanding 14-3 lead entering the ninth inning. However, Felician (23-25) wouldn't go down without a fight and rallied for eight runs in the top half of the ninth inning to make things interesting. The Golden Falcons knocked Wildcat starter Kenny McGrady from the game to start the rally, then went through two relievers before freshman Phil Aviola stopped the bleeding by recording the final two outs.

McGrady allowed single runs in the first two innings, but then settled down and allowed only one more run before running into trouble in the ninth. He improved to 4-4 this season with the win. Sophomore 3B Dave Schoer led Felician by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored, while senior DH Chris Flynn and freshman catcher Jorge Torres each knocked in four runs.
