FELICIAN BASEBALL RALLIES TO DEFEAT DOMINICAN COLLEGE
CHARGERS
Orangeburg, NY (5/1/08) The Golden Falcons of Felician College rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat host Dominican College Chargers, 3-2 this afternoon in a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) baseball game held at Veteran's Field.
Felician took a 1-0 lead in the second as Dave Schoer (Manalpan, NJ) led off the inning with an infield single, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on the triple to center field by Vinnie DiBenedetti (Forked River, NJ).
The Chargers answered back with two runs in the fourth inning as senior Sean Brown (Massapequa, NY) got a free pass to start the inning, stole second and later stole third with one out. Brown later came in to score on a wild pitch, followed by a walk to designated hitter Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY). Mortellaro moved to second on the sacrifice bunt by shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) and went to third on another wild pitch. A FC fielding error brought in Mortellaro and gave DC a 2-1 lead.
The Golden Falcons came back with a run in the seventh as Schoer was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved to second on the sac bunt by Hector Bello (Miami, FL). A single by DiBenedetti loaded the bases and a walk to first basemen Anthony Spina (Toms River, NJ) brought in Schoer and tied the game at 2-2.
Felician pulled ahead in the eighth as Jon Del Franco (Bridgewater, NJ) delieved a two out RBI single up the middle to plate Marcos Torres (Miami, FL), who received a one out walk earlier in the inning to take a 3-2 lead.
DC had a chance to tie it in the ninth as the first two batters reached base, followed by two outs and a bases loaded walk to Brown, but reliever Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ) was able to get the final out with a pop up to the infield for the 3-2 FC victory.
Charger starter Tommy Mejia (Brooklyn, NY) went seven innings in the no decision, allowing two runs on four hits and nine strikeouts. Reliever Andrew Distelhurst (Bardonia, NY) took the loss in two innings of work, allowing one run on three hits and three strikeouts.
Golden Falcon starter Nick Riker (Highlands, NJ) got the win in seven innings of work, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and nine strikeouts. Scott VanEs (Secaucus, NJ) picked up his third save of the season throwing the last two innings, scattering just two hits and three strikeouts.
With the win FC improves to 24-20 overall and 15-9 in the CACC,
while DC falls to 23-23 overall and 15-9 in the CACC.
