BASEBALL LOSES NON-CONFERENCE GAME TO SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT STATE UNIVERSITY

The Chargers got on the board in the first inning with back to back walks to freshman Alexi Colon (Millville, NJ) and Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY). A sacrifice bunt by sophomore Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) advanced the runners and junior Tommy Maloney's (Massapequa Park, NY) sacrifice fly ball to right field brought in Colon and gave DC a 1-0 lead.
SCSU came back in the bottom stanza to tie the game as a runner reached first on a Charger error, stole second and advanced to third on a second DC error. An RBI single brought in the run. The Owls added three runs in the second on one hit and two more errors and scored runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 7-1 lead.
Dominican added two runs in the fifth as Xavier Bonilla (Bronx, NY) led off the inning with a triple to right and scored on Armando Alvarez's (Miami, FL) double to center field. A single by Berrios to left field brought in Alvarez and cut the Owl lead to 7-3.
The Owls put up three more runs in the sixth and seventh innings to bring their lead to 10-3. In the eighth an RBI groundout by Maloney brought in Berrios, who had led off the inning with a walk for DC's fourth run. SCSU answered back with a run in the bottom half of the inning for the eventual 11-4 victory.
Senior Brian Craig (Shenandoah, PA) got the loss after allowing five runs, none earned, on two hits and three walks in three innings. Freshman Cody Smith (Wales, WI) went three innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and rookie Justin Moore (Wantagh, NY) went two innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits.
With the loss Dominican falls to 0-1 on the season.
The Chargers are back in action in Petersburg tomorrow as they take on the University of Massachusetts-Lowell in non-conference action.
