DOMINICAN BASEBALL SWEEP CALDWELL COLLEGE
Orangeburg, NY (4/27/09) The Dominican College baseball team, currently ranked #1 in the NCAA East Region, swept a Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) double-header from the visiting Cougars of Caldwell College this afternoon at Veterans Memorial Park. DC won the first game 19-11 and took the night cap, 10-1.

DC won the first game 19-11 and took the night cap, 10-1.
The Cougars struck for two runs in the top of the first as centerfielder Omar Velazquez (Astoria, NY) led off the game with a single up the middle and Jorges Torres (Coral Springs, FL) was hit by a pitch. A DC throwing error on a fielder's choice allowed Velazquez to score and Torres scored on an RBI ground out by Jon Irwin to take a 2-0 lead. The Chargers got a run back in the bottom stanza on an RBI single up the middle by designated hitter Michael Munoz (Bronx, NY) to score Alexi Colon (Millville, NJ), who had led the inning off with a walk. CC extended their lead to 5-1 in the second as Torres delivered an RBI single and Raymond Keelan (Barnegat, NJ) hit a sacrifice fly ball to center to plate a run. A second DC throwing error allowed Torres to score for a 5-1 Caldwell lead.
Dominican exploded for a ten run second inning as catcher Robert Iglesias (Mays Landing, NJ) hit an RBI double to left and Colon later followed with an RBI single to left. Junior Tommy Maloney (Massapequa Park, NY) hit a big two-run double to left center and Munoz followed with an RBI double to center to put DC up 7-5. Shortstop Mario Lopez (Anthony, NM) delivered a two-run double to right field and Iglesias hit a sacrifice RBI fly ball to left to extend the DC lead. Sophomore Jason Berrios (Brooklyn, NY) hit an RBI single to left for an 11-5 lead.
Caldwell rallied for two run in the third on an RBI single by Miguel Perdomo (Teaneck, NJ) and on a bases loaded walk to Velazquez to cut the deficit to 11-7. DC added two runs in the fourth on a RBI double by Iglesias and an RBI single by Maloney for a 13-7 lead. A two-run home run to right by Keelan in the fifth made the score 13-9, while Dominican scored three runs in the bottom stanza as Berrios hit an RBI single to right, Colon added another RBI single to right and Berrios scored on a wild pitch to build a 16-9 DC lead. A wild pitch in the seventh allowed Willie Mann (Patterson, NY) to score and put DC up 17-9. The Cougars added two runs in the eighth on a two run blast by Adric Saxon (Coral Springs, FL) and the Chargers answered with a two-run double by Dan Robinson (Massapequa, NY) for the final 19-11 score.
Victor Cosme (Brooklyn, NY) got the win (2-0) in 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing four runs on nine hits. Cougar starter Robert Casal (Howard Beach, NY) took the loss (1-3) in 1 1/3 innings, allowing six runs on four hits.
Dominican continued on the offensive in game two scoring seven runs on five hits and capitalizing on two errors. Munoz led off the inning with a double and later stole home and Robinson followed with an RBI single to left. Colon had a two-triple and later scored on a wild pitch. The Cougars scored a run in the third on a sacrifice fly ball by Torres to make the score 7-1. The Chargers added two more runs in the fifth on the two- run single up the middle by Robinson and scored one in the sixth on an RBI single by Marc Mortellaro (Middletown, NY) for a 10-1 DC lead.
Shaun Murphy (Melville, NY) improved to 2-1 in six innings of work, allowing one run on two hits and five strikeouts. Eliezer Cordero (Bridgeport, CT) came in to pitch the seventh.
Dominican improves to 30-9 overall and 18-5 in the CACC and extend their winning streak to 15 games.
