Caldwell, New York Institute of Technology Win at DC New Year's Tournament

Blauvelt, NY (1/4/06)Caldwell College and the New York Institute of Technology both won their first round games of the Dominican College New Year's Tournament held this evening at the Hennessy Center.
In game 1, Caldwell went on a 7-0 run to start the game and never looked back as they led at the half 40-27. The Cougars were led by junior Jean George (Vauxhal, NJ) with the game's only double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds. Forward Manny Perez (Egg Harbor, NJ) added 15 points, while B.J. Suchy (Ronkonkoma, NY) contributed 11 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Mercy had only one player in double figures as junior Dominick Cuzzi (Bronx, NY) led all scorers with 18 points. Manny Garcia (Bronx, NY) added eight points, while Devon Mirjah (Bronx, NY) contributed nine points and eight rebounds in the loss.
Caldwell dominated Mercy on floor shooting 53.3% to Mercy's 39.3%, But the Flyers had the advantage from the free throw line, shooting 87.5% to the Cougar's 56.3%. Caldwell improves to 5-8, while Mercy drops to 3-6.
In game 2, Dominican fought back from a 12-point deficit, trailing 30-42, with 9:23 remaining as Prince Jackson (Schenectady, NY) hit a huge three-point bucket to give the Chargers their first lead, 57-56. However, the Bears retaliated with a chip shot by Daniel Cox (Brooklyn, NY) to go up by a point. With seven minutes remaining junior Jermain Stokes (Ocala, FL) hit jumper to seal the victory for the Bears.
The Bears had four players in double figures, led by Bryant Lassiter (Bayshore, NY) with 23 points. Cox netted 19 points, four steals and three assists, while Stokes added 18 points. Senior Edwin Ebanks (Bellerose, NY) contributed 10 points, respectively.
The Chargers had the only player in the game with a double-double as senior Tahiem Stewart (Harlem, NY) had 17 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Jackson chipped in 15 points off the bench, while freshman Will Carty (Bronx, NY) added 11 points in the loss.
The Bears improve to 2-8 on the year, while the Chargers fall to 2-7.
Dominican will be back in action tomorrow as they host New York Institute of Technology at 5pm at the Hennessy Center to wrap up the DC New Year's Tournament. Caldwell will match up against NYIT at 2pm.
