Bloomfield Deacons Win Thriller in Double Overtime Over Dominican Chargers, 121-119
Bloomfield, NJ (2/9/06) The Bloomfield College Deacons hit the go ahead lay up with one second remaining in double overtime as they defeated the Dominican College Chargers, 121-119 this evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference action.
The Deacons started the game off with a 12-2 run, but Dominican fought back to tie the game at 30-30 with 8:22 remaining in the half. BC went on another good run and took a 54-40 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Bloomfield started off the second half hot again as they built a nineteen point lead just three minutes into the half. DC regrouped to go on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 72-72 with eleven minutes to go. The lead would change eight times before BC's Andre Dabney hit two free throws to put the Deacons up 98-96 with 0:32 seconds left in regulation. Freshman Will Carty (Bronx, NY) hit a jumper with 0:14 seconds left to tie the game at 98-98.
In the first overtime, Bloomfield jumped out to a four point lead with 1:14 left, but Dominican got two big baskets from Prince Jackson (Schenectady, NY) and sophomore Shelton Gibbs (Jersey City, NJ) to tie the game at 109-109 with 0:35 seconds left.
The second overtime once again saw the Deacons jump out to a four point lead and the Chargers rally to tie the game. With one minute remaining Deacon Anthony Separovich tipped in a missed jumper to put BC up 119-117. After a Deacon foul, Carty converted two free throws to once again tie the game at 119-119. As time winded down, Dabney drove the line for the game winning layup with one second left for teh 121-119 victory.
The Chargers had five players in double figures, led by a great all round performance from Jackson with 35 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Tahiem Stewart (Harlem, NY) and freshman Richard Fegins (Elizabeth, NJ) added 15 points each, while Stewart had six rebounds and Fegins added three assists and two steals in the loss. Gibbs finished with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists, while junior Chaz Holloway (Caldwell, NJ) contributed 13 points, respectively. Freshman Zerimar Ramirez (Barrington, RI) had a team leading 10 rebounds.
The Deacons had three players in double figures, led by an amazing shooting performance from Dabney as he had a game leading 50 points (13-20 from the floor, 19-21 from the free throw line), eight rebounds and three assists. Daniel Terrell netted 34 points and seven assists, while Shelton Powell added 16 points and nine rebounds in the win.
DC had the edge from the floor, shooting 56.8% for the game to BC's 51.4%. However, the Deacons dominiated the free throw line, shooting 76.0% to the Charger's 39.3%.
With the win, the Deacons improve to 14-8 overall and 13-4 in the CACC, while the Chargers fall to 8-15 overall and 7-11 in the CACC.
The Chargers are back in action on Thursday, February 16th when they host Holy Family University in a CACC match up. Game time is 8pm at the Hennessy Center.
