Dominican College Chargers Charge Past Holy Family University, 74-67

Blauvelt, NY (2/16/06)The Dominican College men's basketball team revenged a loss earlier in the year by defeating the Tigers of Holy Family University, 74-67 this evening in men's CACC basketball action at the Hennessy Center.

Dominican started off the game on a 9-2 run, led by freshman Will Carty (Bronx, NY) who scored the first five points for the Chargers. DC would lead by as many as eight points in the half, but HFU would battle back, cutting the lead to two on two free throws by senior Ryan Haigh (Philadelphia, PA) with one minute remaining in the half. Junior Bryan Browne (Mt. Vernon, NY) would extend the Charger lead to four, 35-31 on a jumper with 0.07 seconds remaining.

In the second half, the Chargers again came out on fire going on a 12-2 run. Sophomore Shelton Gibbs (Jersey City, NJ) hit a jumper with 15:11 remaining to put the Chargers ahead 49-33. The Tigers would pull to within six points with 2:35 remaining as Hazin Harris (Bedford, NJ) scored a layup to make the score, 64-58. That would be as close as the team would get as the Chargers pulled out the 74-67 victory.

The Tigers had four players in double figures, led by Haigh with 17 points. Ryan Lancaster (Egg Harbor, NJ) netted 15 points, while Harris added 12 points and seven assists, respectively. Dan Welch (Philadelphia, PA) contributed 11 points and four blocks in the loss

The Chargers had three players in double figures, led by junior Prince Jackson (Schenectady, NY) with 19 points and two steals. Senior Tahiem Stewart (Harlem, NY) had the games only double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Senior James Gray (Cortland Manor, NY) contributed 10 points and two steals off the bench in the win.

With the win, the Chargers improve to 9-15 overall and 8-11 in the CACC, while the Tigers fall to 15-11 overall and 11-8 in the CACC.

Dominican will be back in action on Saturday, February 18th when they travel to Felician College in CACC men's basketball action. Game time is 3pm.
