Bloomfield, NJ (12/21/06) The Bloomfield College Deacons rallied from a sixteen point deficit in the second half to defeat the Dominican College Chargers, 81-78 this evening in Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) men's action in Bloomfield, NJ.
Bloomfield started off the game with an 8-0 run, but Dominican battled back to take the lead with 11:13 left in the first half on two good free throws by sophomore Will Carty (Bronx, NY). DC extended the lead to 27-15 with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half as junior center Ron Wyatt (Washingtonville, NY) hit a jumper off the dish by guard Damien Davis (Windsor, CT). The Deacons cut the lead to 39-34 at the half.
In the second half, the Chargers took an early sixteen point lead with 16:44 to go off two good free throws by junior Shelton Gibbs (Jersey City, NJ). Bloomfield cut the lead to five points with 2:35 left in the game off a three point bucket by Tony Wilson and went ahead, 79-78, with fifteen seconds left as senior guard Andre Dabney made good on two free throw attempts.
The Chargers missed the go ahead basket with six seconds left and Dabney got the out let pass and drove down the court for the buzzer ending lay up and the 81-78 victory.
Dabney led all scorers with 36 points, going 15-16 from the free throw line, while Chris Sampson added 12 points and nine rebounds. Tony Wilson contributed 11 points and eight assists in the win.
The Chargers had two players with double-doubles, led by senior forward Prince Jackson (Schenectday, NY) with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Wyatt added 15 points, 15 rebounds and nine blocks in the game. Gibbs contributed 15 points, while Carty netted eight points and seven steals in the loss.
The victory was the first conference win for the Deacons as they improve to 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the CACC, while the Chargers fall to 4-5 overall and 4-2 in the CACC.
The Chargers return to action on January 3 and 4, 2007 when they host the Jim Clancy Memorial Basketball Tournament on Coach Baxter Court at the Hennessy Center. Dominican will play Mercy College on the third at 8pm.
