Senior midfielder Jorge Ibarcena (Lima,
Peru) put the Cougars on top just 3:20 into the first
half, when he collected a ball that was punched out by goalkeeper
Robert Kelly (Kearny, NJ) and scored from 18
yards out. In the 38th minute, the referee awarded Dominican a
penalty kick after the ball brushed the outside of a Caldwell
defender's arm. Diego Miranda (Quito,
Ecuador) placed a shot into the lower left corner to tie
the game at 1-1. Fifteen minutes into the second half, Ryan
Clancy (Pine Bush, NY) sent the ball in the air to
James Hamilton (Renfrewshire,
Scotland), who headed the ball over sophomore goalkeeper
Kareem Grant (Elmont,
NY/Wolmer's) and into the goal for a 2-1 lead.
The Cougars' best chance to tie the score came in the 67th minute,
when junior defender Andrew Fraser
(Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's) hit a rocket from 35
yards out that hit the crossbar and far post in the upper left
corner of the goal and bounced out. Caldwell out-shot Dominican
11-8 on the day.
Grant played just over 66 minutes and made four saves, all in the
first half. Junior goalkeeper John Plaugic
(Kearny, NJ/Kearny) played the final 23 minutes
and did not record a save. Kelly made three saves
