Rindge, NH (8/28/08) Junior forward Joe Wright (Stratford-Upon-Avon, England) notched a goal and an assist on Thursday afternoon to lead Dominican College to a 3-0 victory over Southern Connecticut State University in non-conference men's soccer action at Sodexho Field on the campus of Franklin Pierce University. The match was the first game of the 2008 Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic.
Junior midfielder James Hamilton (Paisley, Scotland) would give Dominican all the offense it needed in the 22nd minute after he was hauled down from behind by an SCSU defender in the penalty area. Hamilton buried the ensuing penalty kick in the lower left corner of the net for the only goal of the game's first half.
Dominican dominated the opening 45 minutes, as the Chargers took an 8-3 shots advantage into the halftime break.
The Chargers tacked on a pair of goals in the second half to create the 3-0 final. First, in the 59th minute, Wright was sprung all alone up the middle of the field off a feed by freshman goalkeeper Brandon Heembrock (Ottawa, Canada). Wright dribbled around SCSU freshman goalkeeper Andrew Esposito (East Haven, Ct) and poked the ball into the empty net.
Later, in the 89th minute, Wright would flick a one-touch pass up the middle to sophomore midfielder Edwin Miranda (Stamford, Ct) who beat Esposito from the top of the penalty area for the match's final goal.
SCSU held a 10-7 shots advantage in the second half, while Dominican enjoyed a 15-13 edge over the full 90 minutes.
Heembrock made three saves in net for the Chargers to earn the clean sheet. Esposito made three saves in front of the SCSU goal in defeat.
Both teams return to action Saturday on the second day of the Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic. SCSU (0-1, 0-0 NE-10) will take on Bridgeport at 4:30 p.m. while Dominican (1-0, 0-0 CACC) will battle host Franklin Pierce at 7:30 p.m.
