Rindge, NH (8/30/08) The Dominican College men's soccer team handed the defending National Champions and no. 1 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Adidas Division II preseason poll, Franklin Pierce University, a 2-0 defeat this evening on day two of the Franklin Pierce Labor Day Classic at Sodexho Field.
The Chargers got on the board in the 35th minute of play as junior midfielder Edwin Miranda (Stamford, CT) took advantage when Raven keeper was unable to collect a loose ball on the end line and the defensive clear went straight to Miranda stepping into the shot and finding the upper left corner of the goal.
Dominican added to the lead at 54:16 as junior forward Joe Wright (Stratford-Upon-Avon, England) took a pass from freshman Alan Heavey (Huntington Station, NY) and his knuckling volley from the top of the 18 on the right side fooled the Franklin Pierce keeper and found the left side of the net.
Freshman goalkeeper Brandon Heembrock (Ottawa, Ontario) didn't face a shot on goal in posting his second-straight shutout to start his collegiate career. Franklin Pierce posted an 11-6 advantage in shots for the match, including 10-4 in the second half, but its inability to test Heembrock with a shot on target provided no chance for victory.
FPU keeper Carl Contrascier (Hinkley, OH) made one save for the Ravens.
With the victory Dominican improves to 2-0 on the season, while Franklin Pierce falls to 1-1.
The Chargers are back in action on Wednesday when they host LeMoyne College at the Torne Valley Sports Complex in a non-conference game. Game time is set for 2pm.
