Rotterdam, NY– The College of Saint Rose softball team was swept in a non-league doubleheader by DominicanCollegeat the RGSL Complex tonight. The Golden Knights (1-11) dropped the opener 4-3 in nine innings, and fell 5-2 in the finale.
Saint Rose rallied from a 3-2 deficit in the seventh inning of the first game when freshman designated player Katie Wiemann (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) smacked a bases loaded, single up the middle that scored freshman pinch hitter Kerry Monahan (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) with the tying run. Sophomore right-hander Kristen Calahan (LaGrange, NY/Arlington) followed by lining out to center field with what had the potential to bring across the winning run, but Dominican doubled up a Saint Rose runner at second to force extra innings.
Two frames later, Dominican (15-7) sophomore right-hander Christine Stathes (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) drove a leadoff homer over the left field fence for what held up as the game-winning run.
Wiemann and freshman shortstop Cara Piccarreto (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit)had two hits apiece while Calahan allowed three earned runs and fanned eight over the distance in a tough-luck loss for the Golden Knights. Sophomore shortstopKatie Farrugia (Cornwall, NY/Cornwall) belted a two-run homer in the fifth to the lead the Lady Chargers attack. Stathes hurled 2.0 innings of one-hit ball in relief of junior right-hander Michelle Bark (West Milford, NJ/West Milford)en route to the victory.
In the nightcap, Dominican broke open a 3-2 game with two runs in the seventh. Stathes drove a leadoff double to the gap in left-center and came around one batter later on a RBI base hit up the middle by Farrugia. Farrugia then scored from third on a bunt single by sophomore third baseman Jackie Terpstra (Middletown, NY/Pine Bush).
Monahan had a pair of doubles and drove in a run while Calahan finished 2-for-4 to lead Saint Rose. Terpstra went 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Lady Chargers.
